What Changed in 2026: Latest Government Updates

These changes affect every new F-1 student. Understand them before you apply.

⏳

Fixed Stay Period for F-1 Students

From 15 September 2026, “duration of status” has ended. New F-1 students are admitted for the length of their programme or up to 4 years, whichever is shorter. Longer programmes need an extension from USCIS.

⌛

Shorter Grace Period

After finishing a programme (or OPT), students now have 30 days, instead of 60, to leave, transfer, change status or start the next authorised step.

🗣️

In-person Interviews

Since 2 September 2025, interview waivers have been largely removed. Most student visa applicants must now attend an in-person interview at the US Embassy or Consulate.

📱

Social Media Screening

Applicants must list the social media accounts they have used in the last 5 years on the DS-160 form, and these are reviewed as part of visa vetting.

💵

New Visa Integrity Fee

A new US$250 Visa Integrity Fee is being collected when the visa is issued, on top of the US$185 visa (MRV) fee and the US$350 SEVIS fee.

🔍

Stricter Scrutiny

Visa approvals for Indian students fell sharply in 2025. Strong academics, clear study plans and genuine, well-documented finances matter more than ever. Apply early.

🔁 Refused Before? There Is Still a Way

US visa refusals are usually decided at the interview (often under section 214(b)). Before re-applying, we review what went wrong, strengthen your profile and prepare you properly for the next interview. We never promise results: the decision always rests with the US consular officer.

💵 How Much Does It Cost?

Government visa costs are currently the US$185 MRV fee, the US$350 SEVIS fee and the new US$250 Visa Integrity Fee. Tuition and living costs vary widely by university and city. In a one-to-one session we give you a realistic budget, scholarship options and a funds plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to what students and parents ask us most.

What changed for F-1 student visas in 2026?

From 15 September 2026, the US ended “duration of status” for F-1 students. New students are admitted for the length of their programme or up to 4 years, whichever is shorter, and must apply to USCIS for an extension if they need more time. The grace period after completing a programme is now 30 days instead of 60.

How much are the US student visa fees?

Most F-1 applicants pay a US$185 visa application (MRV) fee and a US$350 SEVIS I-901 fee. A new US$250 Visa Integrity Fee is also being collected when the visa is issued. Fees can change, so we confirm the latest amounts before you apply.

Do I need to attend a visa interview?

Yes, in most cases. Since 2 September 2025, interview waivers have largely been removed, so most student visa applicants must attend an in-person interview at the US Embassy or a Consulate in India.

Will my social media be checked?

Yes. Student visa applicants must list the social media accounts they have used in the last 5 years on the DS-160 form, and these are reviewed as part of the visa process. Make sure your information is accurate and complete.

Can I work while studying in the USA?

F-1 students can generally work on campus up to 20 hours per week during term. Off-campus work is only allowed through authorised programmes such as CPT and OPT. Rules can change, so we explain the current position during counselling.

What is OPT?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) lets eligible F-1 graduates work in their field for up to 12 months. Graduates of eligible STEM degrees may apply for a further 24-month extension under current rules.

Can I study in the USA with a 3-year bachelor’s degree?

Many US universities accept 3-year Indian degrees for master’s programmes, while others require 16 years of education. We check which universities accept your degree before you apply.

Do you guarantee a US visa?

No. No genuine consultant can guarantee a visa. The decision is made by the US consular officer. We focus on making your application and interview preparation as strong as possible.
