Planning for the Australia Student Visa February 2027 intake? Then the rulebook you apply under is not the one your seniors used.
On 2 October 2026, Australia tightened three things at once: who can apply for a Student visa from inside the country, who can bring a husband, wife or children along, and how soon a student can switch colleges. A couple of weeks earlier, on 19 September, it also reshuffled the queue for skilled visas.
If you are applying from Punjab, Haryana or anywhere else in India, you can still apply exactly as before. What changes is how carefully you need to choose your course, your college and your family plans. Get those wrong now and they are much harder to fix once you land.
Here are the six things every student and parent should understand before paying a single rupee in tuition fees. Each one links to the official Australian Government page, so you can check it yourself.

Australia Student Visa February 2027: the 6 changes in one look
- Applying for a Student visa from inside Australia
- Spouse and children on a Student visa
- The college transfer wait is now 12 months
- Higher Education to VET no longer works onshore
- A new order for skilled visa processing
- What your application still has to prove

1. Applying for a Student visa from inside Australia
This is the biggest of the Australia student visa new rules. From 2 October 2026, most people holding a temporary visa must be outside Australia when they lodge a Student visa (subclass 500) or Student Guardian visa (subclass 590). They also have to be outside Australia on the day it is granted.

Applying from India? Nothing changes for you. You lodge from outside Australia, like every student before you.
Already in Australia on a visitor, working holiday or Temporary Graduate (485) visa? The old move of switching to a Student visa onshore is gone. Home Affairs says there are no exemptions here. The full list of affected visas sits on the Subclass 500 page.
Already on a Student visa? You also need to apply from outside Australia now, unless you fall into a small group of exemptions. These cover students who need up to 12 more months to finish with the same provider, PhD students, DFAT or Defence sponsored students, school students, students moving up to a higher AQF level, and students whose provider defaulted.
On a Student visa as a dependant, and want to become the main student? You must apply from outside Australia. No exemptions at all.
One piece of good news: anything lodged before 2 October 2026 is still judged under the old rules.

2. Can your spouse or children come with you?
For most new students, the honest answer is no.
Since 2 October 2026, a Student visa application can’t include a partner or dependent children unless the student fits an exemption. That applies to a first Student visa and to any further one.

Home Affairs lists only four exempt groups:
- PhD students
- DFAT or Defence sponsored students
- Foreign government scholarship recipients
- Eligible students from Pacific and ASEAN member countries
India is in neither the Pacific nor the ASEAN group. So for most Indian students, the only ways to bring family are a PhD, sponsorship or a foreign government scholarship.
Two more rules catch married couples off guard. First, you can’t add your family later. Once the Student visa is granted, nobody can be added as a subsequent entrant, and Home Affairs says there are no exemptions. Second, families already on a Student visa get only limited carry over. If your spouse or children are on your current visa, they may stay on your next one in a few situations, such as needing up to 12 more months to finish or your provider defaulting. Everyone also has to be in the same place, all inside or all outside Australia, when you lodge.
If you are married, have this conversation at home before you choose a course. Plan as if your family may not be able to travel on your Student visa. Parents, this is worth raising with your son or daughter early.

3. Changing college? The wait is now 12 months
Picking a college used to feel reversible. Join somewhere cheap, switch after six months. Under the Australia student visa new rules, that window has just doubled.
On 2 October 2026, Standard 7 of the National Code was amended. International students (other than school students) must now finish 12 months of their principal course before another provider can enrol them as a transfer. Before this, it was 6 months.

The 12 month rule is temporary. It lasts until 30 June 2027, then drops back to 6 months from 1 July 2027. The government has also announced a new Student visa transfer stream from 1 July 2027, under which students would need their new visa before starting at a new provider.
If you start in February 2027, your whole first year sits under the longer rule. Want to move before you are free to transfer? You will generally need a release letter from your current college, or a reason that fits one of the limited exceptions in Standard 7.
So choose your college as if you are staying. Before you accept an offer, compare:
- What the course actually teaches, and its qualification level
- Tuition fees and the full cost of living in that city
- Location, both the city and the campus
- Industry links, placements and practical training
- Where the qualification takes your career in five or ten years
Easy admission and a low fee are not reasons on their own. Sometimes they are warning signs.

4. Higher Education to VET no longer works onshore
Here is a plan we hear a lot. Get the visa for a university degree, then shift to a cheaper vocational diploma once you are in Australia. For onshore applications, that road is now closed.
Some background first. One exemption lets a Student visa holder who has finished a course apply for a new Student visa from inside Australia, as long as the next course is at a higher AQF level. Home Affairs has added a condition. If you completed a Higher Education course, your next course must also be Higher Education, delivered by a Higher Education provider.

So a student who finishes a university degree and then wants a VET diploma can’t use this exemption. Unless another exemption applies, they would have to lodge the new Student visa from outside Australia.
The fix is to plan the whole journey before you leave India. Pick a course that builds on what you studied, the skills you have and the job you want:
Course → Skills → Experience → Employability → Future opportunities
The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) ranks qualifications from level 1 to level 10. Check the level of your current and planned course before changing anything.

5. A new order for skilled visa processing
On 19 September 2026, two Ministerial Directions came into force, numbers 121 and 122. Together they replaced every processing priority under Direction 119.
Direction 121 covers the temporary Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa. Direction 122 covers provisional and permanent skilled visas, including subclasses 186, 189, 190 and 491.

Under both, these sectors go to the front of the queue:
- Construction
- Healthcare
- Teaching
- Agriculture, aquaculture and fishing
- Resources
- Australia’s law enforcement and defence interests
After that, people who were in Australia when they lodged usually come ahead of those who lodged from outside.
So does a healthcare or construction course mean PR?
No, and please don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. A processing priority decides only the order in which eligible applications are looked at. It doesn’t change who is eligible or which occupations are on the lists. It doesn’t promise a job, an invitation, a skilled visa or permanent residency.
These priorities also move fast. Direction 119 lasted less than two months before it was replaced, and the list you see today may look different by the time you graduate. Choose a course you can do well and build a career on. Treat PR as something you work towards, never as a promise.

6. What your application still has to prove
This part isn’t one of the Australia student visa new rules, but it trips up more students than any rule change. A college offer is not a visa. Your file has to meet the Student visa (subclass 500) requirements on its own.

- Genuine Student (GS) requirement. Explain clearly, and the same way every time, why this course, why this college and why Australia, and how it connects to your past study and your goals.
- Financial capacity. Show you can pay tuition, living costs and travel.
- English language. Meet the test and score that apply to you, unless you are exempt.
- Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). For a course registered on CRICOS.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Adequate health insurance for your whole stay.
- Health and character. Meet both requirements.
- Academic documents. Certificates, transcripts, and an honest explanation for any study gap.
- Consistency. Every form and document should tell the same true story.
Can a strong file guarantee a visa? No. A complete, carefully prepared application helps your case. The decision still belongs to the Department of Home Affairs and nobody else.

Your Australia Student Visa February 2027 plan
- Lock in your course and college early. Compare fees, city, course content and career fit. Assume you will stay for at least your first year.
- Read the rules at the source. Check the Australia student visa 2027 requirements on the official pages linked here, not an old reel or a forwarded WhatsApp message.
- Sort your finances. Budget for tuition, living costs, travel and OSHC, and keep your financial documents clean and traceable.
- Talk it through at home. If you are married or have children, plan for the possibility that they can’t come on your Student visa.
- Think beyond graduation. Choose a qualification that gives you real skills and experience. PR can be a goal, but it is never a guarantee.
Questions students and parents ask us
Can I apply from India for the Australia Student Visa February 2027 intake?
Yes. Applying from outside Australia, India included, is the normal route. You still have to meet every Student visa requirement.
Can I take my wife or husband with me on a Student visa?
Usually not. Under the Australia student visa new rules from 2 October 2026, a partner or children can only be included if you are in an exempt group: PhD students, DFAT or Defence sponsored students, foreign government scholarship holders, or eligible Pacific and ASEAN students.
Can my spouse join me after my visa comes through?
Not as a subsequent entrant on your Student visa. Home Affairs says there are no exemptions to this.
Can I change college after I reach Australia?
Not freely in your first year. Until 30 June 2027, you need to complete 12 months of your principal course before transferring, unless you get a release or meet a limited exception. It goes back to 6 months from 1 July 2027.
Can I move from a university degree to a VET course?
Not under the onshore course progression exemption. After a Higher Education course, that exemption only covers another Higher Education course at a Higher Education provider.
I’m in Australia on a visitor visa. Can I apply for a Student visa from there?
No. Visitor visa holders are among the affected temporary visa holders and must lodge from outside Australia.
Which sectors get skilled visa priority?
Construction, healthcare, teaching, agriculture, aquaculture, fishing, resources, and law enforcement and defence interests, under Ministerial Directions 121 and 122.
Will studying in Australia get me PR?
Not automatically. A course doesn’t guarantee a job, an invitation, a skilled visa or permanent residency. Your options will depend on the rules in force when you apply.
One last word
Australia is still a strong choice, and the Australia student visa 2027 route is still open. But anyone applying for the Australia Student Visa February 2027 intake faces tighter rules on family, college changes and switching visas onshore, and there is far less room now for a “we’ll sort it out later” plan. Choose well the first time, prepare an honest file, and check every rule on the official website before any money changes hands.
